80 years have passed since the Mayor sofa lifestyle
The design by Arne Jacobsen and Flemming Lassen consolidates its timelessness, some eight decades after its creation. We congratulate the iconic piece of furniture which laid the foundations of Scandinavian modernism.
It has been 80 years since the Mayor sofa became a new design icon. In 1939, the creators of Danish modernism: Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) and Flemming Lassen (1902-1984); joined forces to shape and give character to this historic furniture which comes with a romantic silhouette and a peculiar back.
A symbol of timelessness and contemporary spirit, the Mayor sofa keeps on captivating design enthusiasts some eight decades after its creation. Among its distinguishing features, one can find its simple lines and solid oak structure upholstered in natural leather which reaches its straight high back.
Mayor encourages attention and conversation while its high back creates an intimate space which, staying inside the room, achieves in isolating itself.
Originally made by craftsmen from high-quality raw materials, the Mayor sofa provides authenticity and a signature character. Two rows of buttons on its back enhance a design which still looks modern today.
The Mayor sofa is one of the first furniture designs by Arne Jacobsen, and as such, stands out from the rest of the creations for which the designer is known worldwide. Whereas the Egg and Swan armchairs show an evolved Jacobsen geared towards international modernism, Mayor portraits Danish traditions of fine wood and functional solutions.
At the beginning, only two Mayor sofa models were produced. A point which is as curious as the story which is behind its launch.
